The candle has a memory- so the first burn please make sure you burn until the wax has melted to the edge of the jar.
When the wax starts to melt, remove your crystal. This ensures that the crystal won't fall onto the wick. I like to keep my crystals near the jar until the candle has finished it's full burn.
Always remember to trim the wick before lighting each time.
